Sarah Squire | Patient Representative

By day, I am a Research Scientist at the University of Oxford working on therapies to treat Duchenne muscular dystrophy. My involvement in the colorectal world grew following many surgeries, including a permanent colostomy due to a persistent rectovaginal fistula. I wanted to help others feel less alone and more well informed on their patient journeys. With my scientific background, this evolved into more involvement in research, alongside the patient support I still believe is so important. I am passionate about patients having a voice to influence future directions in stoma care, stoma products and colorectal research. I am a huge advocate for colostomy irrigation as a management option for suitable colostomates and try use my experience to help nurses and patients explore this option.

I am Chair of the ACPGBI Patient Liaison Group and a Coloplast Consumer Ambassador. Previously I was a Volunteer and Trustee of Colostomy UK, Council Member of the MASIC Foundation and a Patient Advisor for the IDEAL Collaboration.
