Shelagh Bickerton
Lead Nurse for Acute Kidney Injury, Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust
Shelagh is a veteran nurse of 30 years, most of which she has spent working in the critical care arena, both as an Intensive Care Sister and Critical Care Outreach Sister. She has also dabbled in education and research work and completed a post-graduate research internship at the University of Birmingham. She then moved on to working as a Colorectal Nurse Specialist, caring for patients with bowel-related conditions, including patients with ileostomies and internal pouches. Since 2020, she has been the lead nurse for the Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) Team at the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, developing a service which has gained national recognition, with her work being presented on both the national and international stage. She has presented widely on AKI-related subjects and has published in several peer-reviewed journals. She is Chair of the Association of Nephrology Nurses AKI Community of Practice Group, a member of the UK Kidney Association AKI Special Interest Group and also provides peer support and education to other AKI services across the UK. Her project work on reducing AKI in patients with ileostomies was shortlisted for the Nursing Times Awards, 2025.
