Michelle Hicken qualified over 30 years ago and entered the world of colorectal/stomacare in 1998 and her first colorectal posting commenced in 2001 when she joined the colorectal nursing team at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. This was a joint role doing both stoma care and colorectal oncology nursing. In 2014 she joined UHCW as the lead colorectal oncology nurse before moving back to surgery in 2021 as the lead for colorectal/stomacare nursing. To date she has transformed this service and throughout her career has achieved a number of academic accolades and has presented nationally and internationally on a number of subjects
