Penny Harrison | Senior Lecturer in Nursing at De Montfort University

I qualified as a nurse at the Nightingale School of Nursing, St Thomas’ Hospital, London in 1985. I have experience in medical, surgical, critical care and gastrointestinal and hepatology nursing, latterly managing two medical wards. I moved to nurse education at De Montfort University, Leicester in 1999 and I teach pre-registration, post-registration and post-graduate studies for nursing students / qualified nurses and health care professionals. I have a professional interest in delivering modules / programmes for nurses working in gastroenterology, gastric surgery, hepatology, endoscopy, nutrition, stoma care and independent study. This is reflected in the development and twice annual delivery of PCPH 5020 / 3020 Advanced Principles and Practice of Stoma Care, a specialist stoma care module in conjunction with Salts Healthcare Ltd, Birmingham (an ostomy manufacturing company (a first for DMU LSONM as a collaborative module between an HEI and industry). I am a member of the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSGNA Nurses Association), the Midlands Gastrointestinal Nurses Group (MGNS), the Association of Stoma Care Nurses (ASCN) and the Royal College of Nursing’s (RCN) GI Forum. I am on the Editorial Board and publish a monthly column on professional issues for Gastrointestinal Nursing Journal. I am based in Leicester, enjoy regular aquafit, my two cats and playing the clarinet in an amateur orchestra and an amateur wind band.

Professional interests: gastroenterology, gastric surgery, hepatology, endoscopy, nutrition, stoma care and independent study plus professional / leadership issues.
